Koryu budo (古流 武道) is a Japanese term that translates literally as "old school" or "old tradition" martial art. It is used to refer to schools of martial arts that predate the Meiji Restoration, a political event/era that precipitated Japan's modernisation. While arts postdating this era (gendai budo such a Judo, Iaido or Aikido) are valued either as sports or arts for self improvement, the koryu are the teachings of a feudal military culture. Very few, if any, true koryu arts exist today, even most traditional lineages have developed a somewhat modern outlook due to the simple reality that conditions in the modern era are not the same as those in the pre-Meji era.
